Adam van Koeverden: Olympics will not be my last race

Adam van Koeverden struggled to a sixth place finished in the semis of the men’s kayak 1000m.

Adam van Koeverden has one more shot to orchestrate the perfect race plan he had in mind for these Olympic Games. But there won’t be a medal on the line.

The four-time Olympic medallist, the face of kayaking in this country, had a difficult start to his semi-final K-1, 1,000-metre heat on Monday, and despite battling back, he failed to advance to Tuesday’s final, finishing sixth. Van Koeverden, 34, will race in Tuesday’s B Final, for boats that will place ninth and higher.

A few weeks before he departed for Rio, the kayaker from Oakville, Ont., caught up with Sportsnet to talk about his perfect race, his impact on the sport, and how he sometimes feels “old.”
