REGINA — Canadian Olympic speedskater Justin Warsylewicz has announced his retirement.
Warsylewicz, from Regina, won a silver medal at the 2006 Turin Olympics in the long-track team pursuit along with Arne Dankers, Steven Elm, Denny Morrison and Jason Parker. He also finished second in the same event at the 2007 World Single Distance Championships.
His Olympic medal came after he missed the first part of the 2004-2005 season with a heart irregularity.
He also won the world overall junior title in 2004.
"I’m very proud and grateful for what I have been able to accomplish over my career", the 28-year-old Warsylewicz said in a statement. "For sure it was a disappointment to be unable to reach my goal to represent Canada at the 2014 Olympic Games even if I skated one of my best races in a long time at the trials. However, my Olympic medal and my world junior champion title will stay in my memory for a long time."
Warsylewicz, who is married to Olympic speedskater Brittany Schussler, will study kinesiology at the University of Calgary.
