It may not be possible to catch all the best moments in a single day of the Olympic Games, but we’re going to try. Every day, we’ll award medals for standout achievements at (and around) Pyeongchang 2018 and feats that may or may not be recognized on the podium (and may or may not even be of an athletic nature).
Day 13 of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games featured more great stuff from Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue.
Gold medal for best Canadian fan
One of the most anticipated events of the Games took place Wednesday night when the Canadian women’s hockey team battled their American rivals in the gold-medal match. Lots of Canucks stayed up to watch it back home, but in Pyeongchang, one fan represented all of us.
Olympic champion Scott Moir, fresh off his ice dance gold medal with partner Tessa Virtue, was seated in the crowd among other Canadian athletes.
Beer in hand, he reacted angrily in the first period when Canada was handed its third consecutive penalty. And that, folks, is how a viral moment is made.
You don’t have to be an expert mouth reader to see Moir yell, “Are you kidding me? Wake up!” to the referees, before letting off a “Boo!”
And you can’t miss fellow Canuck skater Patrick Chan, seated to Moir’s left, looking shocked at what was happening on the ice.
The two would have a lot more to be disappointed about by the end of the game as Canada fell in the shootout to earn a silver. While that’s sad, we’ll always remember that one moment where Moir represented a whole nation.

My reaction when I didn’t have my partner-in-crime at the “mandatory” exhibition practice today
SO happy at least one of us could be there to cheer on our girls! I’m with you in spirit!!!!!

UPDATE: Moir was also spotted later in the day cheering on the Canadian men’s curling squad in their semifinal match against the U.S.
In case you’re wondering, @ScottMoir is STILL cheering on Canada.

Gotta love this guy.
Although, the men’s team did lose 5–3 to the Americans, ensuring they’ll have to settle for no more than a bronze medal. So… one could argue that… maybe Moir is… a bad luck charm?
But let’s not go there, OK? It’s been a hard day for Canadians.

Gold medal for responding with wit
Moir and Virtue captured the hearts of Canadians this week and that even extends to Hollywood. Deadpool actor and Vancouver native Ryan Reynolds was floored by the ice dance pair and sent out this tweet a few days ago.
Go @TeamCanada!!@CassieSharpe is a legend — makin’ it look easy. And thank you @tessavirtue & @ScottMoir for agreeing to raise my children as your own.
— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) February 20, 2018
I mean, to be honest, how do you really respond to that? It’s definitely a different thing to say.
Well, Virtue responded with her trademark grace and poise, turning Reynold’s tweet into a quip about post-retirement plans.
And here I’ve been wracking my brain to come up with a post-competition career path … Scott, get the mini van!

Gold medal for shoddy worksmanship
All Darya Domracheva wanted to do was grab the Belarusian flag, head to the finish line and celebrate her team’s gold medal–winning performance in the 4×6-km biathlon relay.
But because of some shoddy workmanship and wind at the Pyeongchang Olympics, she wasn’t able to.
As the GIF above shows, Domracheva grabbed the flag and just as she began to raise it in glory, the cloth slipped flush off the pole.
She was denied a picturesque moment, but we’re sure Domracheva’s quite pleased that she’s at least taking home a gold medal.
