U.S. downs Canada in women’s Sochi warmup

CALGARY — The U.S. defeated Canada 5-1 in women’s hockey Thursday night.

Alex Carpenter, Brianna Decker, Hilary Knight and Meghan Duggan scored with Megan Bozek adding an empty netter for the Americans.

Tara Watchorn scored the lone goal for Canada.

Canada mustered 16 shots on American goaltender Jessie Vetter. Canadian goaltender Shannon Szabados stopped 24 of 28 in the loss.

Canadian team head coach Dan Church abruptly resigned Thursday morning. He cited a lack of confidence in him by the organization as the reason for his departure.

Assistant coaches Danielle Goyette and Lisa Haley were behind Canada’s bench.

Canada and the U.S. square off in three more exhibition games before the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
