SPORTSNET ONE PRESENTS CANADA’S ROAD TO THE 2011 CONCACAF GOLD CUP
Sportsnet will carry all of Canada’s matches in the opening round
TORONTO (June 2, 2011) – Rogers Sportsnet will broadcast Canada’s quest to capture the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, starting Tuesday, June 7 at 8 p.m. (ET)/5 p.m. (PT) when they face the host United States on Sportsnet ONE.
Gerry Dobson will handle the play-by-play for all Canada games, while former Canadian soccer keeper Craig Forrest provides the analysis.
Sportsnet will broadcast all three of Canada’s group stage matches, including coverage of the quarterfinals, semifinals and the final. In addition, Sportsnet will also carry a pair of U.S. group stage matches as well. All Gold Cup games will air on Sportsnet ONE.
Canada is in Group C of the 12-team competition along with the U.S., Panama and Guadeloupe. All four teams will play each other throughout the opening round with all games being held in the United States. This will be the 11th edition of the Gold Cup, with the winner of the tournament qualifying for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.
Sportsnet carried Canada’s only Gold Cup victory when they defeated Colombia 2-0 in the final in 2000. Canada took the championship on the heels of a stellar performance from Forrest, who was named tournament MVP and Most Valuable Goalkeeper for allowing just three goals and stopping two penalties in his side's five games.
Canada’s last stop at the CONCACAF Gold Cup was in 2009 when they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Honduras. Mexico eventually claimed the Gold Cup with a 5-0 win over the U.S. in the final.
Sportsnet broadcasts the Barclays Premier League, Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Canadian National Team Soccer and the UEFA Champions League.
