It's always a guessing game when you show up for training at BMO Field. In reality, it could be called 'Name that player'. There's always a new guy in town. Who is No. 37? Most of the time it doesn't matter; and Thursday morning the mystery man was wearing No. 26. Only it was no mystery. Hardcore supporters will know that ex-Manchester City man Paul Dickov has been seen around town this week. On this day he was wearing Toronto's training blues for the first time.
You might have found Darren Huckerby there as well except he's off to San Jose to test the waters. But if push comes to shove, Earthquakes GM Frank Yallop will have to deal with Mo Johnston as TFC own the MLS rights to both players. By all accounts they love everything they see about Toronto, although Johnston acknowledged that Huckerby has some reservations about the turf at BMO Field. At any rate Toronto wins if either player sets foot on an MLS pitch for real. Whether either player still has anything to offer in their mid-30s remains to be seen.
Then there's that other EPL returnee, Brian McBride. No movement on this front as McBride can't suit up in this league until July 15, anyway. That one is simmering, but nowhere near boiling. Johnston was in a talkative mood on this day while making his feelings known on just about any issue an inquiring reporter might have on his mind. At the the end of training, there he is back on the phone, as usual. I'll bet one of McBride, Dickov or Huckerby will be playing for the Reds within two weeks.
