The arrival of a new striker could not have come at a better time for Toronto FC, who received some bad news about leading-scoring Danny Dichio on Thursday.
"Danny (Dichio) has suffered a bit of a setback," Carver said during his Thursday Q&A. "I've just spoke with the doctors."
Dichio suffered the concussion during TFC's 1-nil home loss to Vancouver on July 1. The setback occurred when Dichio participated in some light training earlier this week.
Carver will use the newly acquired Barrett on Sunday versus FC Dallas, and hopes to have one player player in before kick-off.
"We've got other things going on as well and I am keeping my fingers crossed that we might have someone in by the time we play on Sunday."
When asked if that player was Paul Dickov, Carver acknowledged the name, but added that the club will no longer try to target just one player.
"He's (Dickov) one of the options; obviously you can make people an offer, but whether they come back to you and accept that offer is another matter," Carver said. "Rather than putting all of our irons in one fire, we will have a look at two or three different options."
Toronto FC also announced Thursday that they have waived defender Olivier Tebily. Tebily, 32, was acquired as a free agent on April 24, 2008.
"Olivier has decided that he wanted to be closer to his family in France," said manager, director of soccer Mo Johnston. "We wish him all the best, and thank him for his contribution to Toronto FC."
The Ivory Coast native started in three of four games for Toronto FC logging 234 minutes. An ankle injury kept him out of the lineup for the better part of the last month.
