TORREON, Mexico -- An injury-time meltdown has eliminated the Montreal Impact from the CONCACAF Champions League.
Darwin Quintero scored twice in injury time Thursday and Santos Laguna of Mexico advanced to the Champions League semifinals with a 5-2 win over the Impact.
Santos advanced with a 5-4 aggregate.
The Impact, who play in the United Soccer Leagues, came into the game with a distinct advantage, having won the first leg of the quarter-final 2-0 in Montreal Feb. 25 in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 55,571 at Olympic Stadium.
The lead looked even more secure at halftime Thursday, as the Impact led 2-1. Even heading into injury time down 3-2, the Impact were in the driver's seat. Had the aggregate score been tied, the Impact would have advanced with a 2-0 edge in away goals.
Then the unthinkable happened. Colombia attacker Quintero scored in the third and fourth minutes of extra time to seal advancement to the next round, where Santos will face Atlante of Mexico.
"The team should have done better as far as applying the basic principles, which we normally execute well," said Impact head coach John Limniatis. "Santos Laguna showed a lot of energy and this is normal when a team scores goals. It kept them going until the end. We didn't work as much. It's unfortunate to finish this way."
Cruz Azul of Mexico will play the Puerto Rico Islanders in the other semifinal.
Matias Vouso scored twice and Christian Benitez added one for Santos. Roberto Brown and Eduardo Sebrango notched Montreal's goals.
Sebrango had three goals in the series, after scoring both goals in the first leg.
The loss was just the Impact's second of the tournament. After earning the right to be the lone Canadian team in the 24-club competition, they beat Real Esteli of Nicaragua in a playoff, then finished second in their four-team group last fall to reach the quarter-final.
