GLASGOW, Scotland -- American midfielder Maurice Edu is expected to be out of action for three months after undergoing surgery to repair his injured left knee, Scottish champion Rangers said Friday.

Edu was taken off the field with knee ligament damage after a strong challenge by Dundee United's Darren Dods on May 24. The injury ruled him out of last weekend's Scottish Cup final victory over Falkirk.

Rangers said 23-year-old Edu had surgery in London on Thursday and is expected to be sidelined until September, missing the start of the next Scottish season which kicks off in August.

He was also ruled out of the United States' World Cup qualifiers and the Confederation Cup being played in South Africa from June 14-28.

Edu started his professional career with Toronto FC of Major League Soccer. He won the 2007 MLS rookie of the year award with TFC.
