LONDON -- Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor scored to give Manchester City a 2-0 win over Bolton on Tuesday night that moved it up to fifth place in the Premier League.

Tevez beat goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen with a penalty kick in the 31st minute for his 20th goal of the season after Adam Johnson was fouled by Paul Robinson. Jaaskelainen stood to one side of the goal to tempt Tevez into shooting down the middle, and Tevez did so, but the ball deflected off his knee and into the goal.

Adebayor scored his ninth goal in the 71st off a pass by Patrick Vieira.

Manchester City (12-4-8) has 44 points and trails Liverpool (13-7-5) on goal difference. Liverpool is at third-place Arsenal (15-6-4) in one of six games Wednesday.

First-place Chelsea (18-3-4) is at Everton (8-8-8), and defending champion Manchester United (18-5-2). which trails by two points, is at Aston Villa (11-5-8).

In Tuesday's other games, Fulham beat Bolton 3-0, Sunderland tied Portsmouth 1-1 and Stoke tied Wigan 1-1.

At Craven Cottage, Danny Murphy, David Elm and Bobby Zamora scored for the Cottagers (9-10-7), who are 2-0-1 following an 0-5-1 slide. Fulham moved ahead of Everton into ninth with 34 points, while Bolton (5-11-8) is 17th, just above the relegation zone.

Darren Bent got his 16th goal of the season for 13th-place Sunderland (6-11-8) but last-place Portsmouth (4-17-4) salvaged just its 16th point of the season when Aruna Dindane headed in a goal at the back post with almost the last touch of the match.

Tuncay Sanli scored in the 74th minute for 11th-place Stoke (7-8-9), which had fallen behind 14th-place Wigan (6-12-6) on Paul Scharner's 14th-minute goal.

Newcastle lost 3-0 at Derby and fell out of first place in the second-tier League Championship. West Bromwich Albion beat Scunthorpe 2-0 and took the lead on goal difference. Nottingham Forest remained four points back in third after losing 1-0 at Coventry.
