  • Its a fair comment to say there's been no time like this in the history of Toronto FC.

Perched in second place in the Eastern Conference of MLS with 16 points after a third of the season is a lofty position indeed. That translates into 48 points on the season and surely the franchise's first ever playoff spot. But that's a story for another day.

The fact is the Reds are now unbeaten in four league matches, have picked up their first away win of the season and can head into the two-week break flying higher than ever with a win over struggling Kansas City next Saturday at BMO Field.

No doubt there were some raised eyebrows when head coach Preki elected once again to start Dwayne DeRosario and Julian DeGuzman on the substitute's bench. Unlike the last time he tried it, and subsequently admitted it didn't work in a 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake, this time the move made him look like a genius. That match at Rio Tinto Stadium by the way was the last time this team lost a match. That was way back on May 1st. And that streak includes three matches in the already clinched Nutrilite Canadian Championship.

Yes indeed, these are heady days for your Toronto FC.

Preki can now afford to rest several of his key players in Wednesday night's finale against Vancouver in that competition.

Even though the match is meaningless, don't expect the Whitecaps to do the same. They actually made a number of changes in a 2-1 loss to Rochester Saturday night and word is they will field their strongest possible line-up to faceToronto. The Whitecaps feel it's important to take this competition seriously and do not want to be embarrassed on national television.

If there is any dark cloud on the horizon it's the play of Stefan Frei. Clearly he is quickly developing into one of the best, if not the best, shot-stopper in the league. Eventually that could mean one thing. Bigger clubs in bigger leagues will come calling. One wonders how long MLSE can resist the temptation to cash in on a transaction that could make millions for the franchise.

But like making the playoffs, that's a story for another day.
