After some minor complications, Dwayne De Rosario has been shipped to New York City.
The Spidey Senses were tingling Friday morning when the release came from Toronto FC that, yet again, the daily routine had changed. Nothing unusual about this one, but for some reason it didn't sit right.
So my buddy Craig Forrest started working the phones. One thing led to another and before we knew it, the pieces added up: Dwayne De Rosario to the New York Red Bulls for two young players and a first-round pick next year.
If not for the fact it happened on April Fool's Day, perhaps it wouldn't have been met with such skepticism. But this one was for real. By midmorning, both teams had agreed to the deal.
But of course, such are the vagaries of MLS that until all the paperwork is signed, sealed and delivered, nothing can be announced. So there was the strange scenario of no DeRo at training, solid information that a trade had been made and yet nothing but stonewalling from the teams involved.
Then, by mid-afternoon came word of a snag: a legal issue involving one of the Toronto-bound players. Which one, we're not sure. We do know this: Toronto covets 21-year-old midfielder Tony Tchani. We're told there are no legal issues with him. If that's the case, this issue can't possibly be a deal breaker.
But by dinnertime the deal was done. De Rosario, unhappy with how things were going in Toronto, is headed to New York for De Rosario to the New York Red Bulls for Tchani, defender Danleigh Borman and a first-round pick.
