TFC sign defender Aceval

TORONTO -- Toronto FC continued to shore up its backline Monday with the signing Chilean defender Miguel Aceval.

The 29-year-old has spent his entire career playing in South America, including stops in Chile and Uruguay.

Aceval earned his first international cap with the Chilean national team Sept. 4, 2011 during a 1-0 friendly loss to Mexico.

"Miguel is an experienced defender that has a lot of potential and can be very important for our club," Toronto FC coach Aron Winter said in a statement. "Our defence needed to be addressed during the off-season and this signing complements our recent activity from last week."

The move is pending receipt of Aceval's international transfer certificate.

Toronto FC added Ecuadorian international centre back Geovanny Caicedo to the squad Thursday and also made right back Richard Eckersley's loan move from English club Burnley permanent.

The Reds allowed a MLS-worst 59 goals in 2011 to finish with a disappointing 6-13-15 record.
