Canada to play Denmark in friendly

OTTAWA — Canada will play its first game since failing to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup when it meets Denmark in a soccer friendly in January.

The Canadian Soccer Association announced Monday that the senior men’s national team will take on the European side in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 26 as part of the preparation for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States.

The game will be the Canadians’ first since a disastrous 8-1 thrashing to Honduras in October that ended any chance of making the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

Stephen Hart resigned as coach after the loss and Canada Soccer has yet to name a replacement.

Canada and Denmark last played in 1995, with the Danes scoring a 1-0 victory at SkyDome in Toronto.
