BRUSSELS — Belgian authorities have opened an investigation into possible financial fraud within the national soccer federation.

The prosecutor’s office says several people have already been heard during the preliminary probe into corruption at the federation. At this stage, no one has been charged with wrongdoing.

Local media said the probe centres on the payment of wages and the use of subsidies. The Belgian national team is currently No. 1 in the FIFA rankings.

The team reached the quarterfinals at the 2014 World Cup, after which the federation was accused of profligate spending.
