CSA approves CPL, elects Steven Reed as new president

Canadian soccer took a massive step forward on Saturday, as the Canadian Soccer Association unanimously approved the Canadian Premier League.

Hamilton and Winnipeg were unveiled as the CPL’s first two official markets. The CSA says 10 cities have also expressed interest in fielding a team in the league.

The league is set to begin following the 2018 World Cup, though the first full season is expected to begin in 2019.

Canada Soccer also elected a new president on Saturday. Steven Reed will lead the association over the next three years as Victor Montagliani moves into his new role as CONCACAF president and vice president of FIFA.

Reed has been a board member with the CSA since 2006 and became vice president in 2012. He has been involved in soccer for more than 50 years.
