BOYDS, Md. — Canadian Dwayne De Rosario recorded a hat trick to give struggling D.C. United a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.
The Toronto native put United ahead in the 24th minute with a blast from outside the box into the lower left corner of the net. A long scoring drought by both teams ensued until De Rosario gave United a 2-0 lead with his second goal in the 75th.
Jack McInerney scored a minute later to pull the Union back within a goal, but De Rosario completed his hat trick in the 85th and D.C. was able to hold on.
With the win, United advances to a quarter-final matchup against the New England Revolution on June 26.
Carolina Railhawks 3, Chivas USA 1
CARY, N.C. — Cesar Elizondo scored to go-ahead goal in extra time Wednesday night to lead the Carolina Railhawks to a 3-1 win over Chivas USA in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Brian Ackley added an insurance goal for the NASL team with a header off Floyd Franks’ corner kick later in extra time.
Ty Shipalane put Carolina ahead in the 13th minute, scoring into an open net on a one-touch assist from Brian Shriver.
Chivas tied it in the 57th when Walter Vilchez Soto headed in Carlos Alvarez’ free kick from the right sideline.
Carolina, which beat the Los Angeles Galaxy in the third round for the second straight year May 29, will play at Real Salt Lake in a quarterfinal on June 26.
FC Dallas 3, Houston Dynamo 0
FRISCO, Texas — Kenny Cooper scored twice to lift FC Dallas to a 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamo in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night.
Cooper scored on a right-footed shot from 3 yards out in the 39th minute and headed in Michel’s corner kick in the 59th minute from inside 6 yards, giving him seven goals in U.S. Open Cup play.
Zach Loyd added a goal in the 76th minute when he fired a looping volley from 25 yards away, catching Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric out of position.
Houston rested many of its MLS starters, including goalkeeper Tally Hall, Corey Ashe, and Giles Barnes, and was without U.S. national team call-up Brad Davis.
FC Dallas was without starting goalkeeper Raul Fernandez, who was with Peru’s national team.
Dallas will host its quarterfinal on June 26.
New England Revolution 4, New York Red Bulls 2
BOSTON — Kelyn Rowe scored twice to lead the New England Revolution over the New York Red Bulls 4-2 on Wednesday night in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Dimitry Imbongo scored the winner for the Revolution in the 51st minute before Chris Tierney added a goal in the 87th for New England, which advanced to a quarterfinal matchup against D.C. United on June 26.
Fabian Espindola and Jonny Steele scored for the Red Bulls.
Rowe put the Revolution up early when he grabbed a pass from Gabe Latigue and fired a shot past goalkeeper Ryan Meara in the fourth minute. Espindola tied it in the 30th before Rowe scored again in the 37th.
Imbongo scored when he collected a long pass from Kalifa Cisse and beat Meara.
Real Salt Lake 5, Charleston 2 (OT)
SANDY, Utah — Rookie forward Devon Sandoval scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in overtime, as Real Salt Lake rallied for a 5-2 win over Charleston on Wednesday night to advance to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.
With Salt Lake trailing 2-0 at halftime, Sandoval and Joao Plata each scored in the second half to force overtime. Sandoval, Khari Stephenson and Javier Morales scored in the extra period.
Salt Lake will next host Carolina on June 26.
Dane Kelly and Nicki Paterson scored in the first half for the Battery.
Sandoval got Salt Lake on the scoreboard in the 66th minute to cut Charleston’s lead to 2-1. Plata tied it with a penalty kick in the 79th.
Sandoval put Salt Lake ahead for good in the 97th, Stephenson made it 4-2 in the 105th and Morales capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the third minute of stoppage time in the overtime.
