DORTMUND, Germany — Borussia Dortmund and Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin has been ruled out of action for an estimated two months after a knee operation.

The Bundesliga club says on its website that Sahin underwent surgery on Wednesday, when doctor Heinz-Juergen Eichhorn removed inflamed tissue from his left knee.

Team doctor Markus Braun estimated the player’s recovery period.

Sahin has been plagued by knee problems since Dortmund’s preparations for the season began, initially with knee capsule irritation then tendinitis. He is yet to play a competitive game this season.

Sahin has made 49 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund, scoring five goals and setting up six more, since his return from Real Madrid in January 2013.
