EIBAR, Spain — Eibar beat second-division rival Alaves 1-0 on Sunday to secure promotion into Spain’s top league for the first time in its 74-year history.
Eibar’s win coupled with Las Palmas’ 3-2 loss against Recreativo Huelva secured the club’s promotion for next season with two games to spare.
Second-place Deportivo La Coruna failed to secure its immediate return to the first division after losing 2-1 at Numancia, but the Galician club can still secure its place in the penultimate round.
Teams that finish third through sixth face off in a playoff to determine the third team to go up.
Real Betis, Real Valladolid, and Osasuna were all relegated from the first division this season.
