LIVERPOOL, England — Everton could leave its Goodison Park home of more than a century after been given permission to move forward with plans to build a new stadium.
The club says in a joint statement also released Tuesday by Liverpool’s city council that nearby Walton Hall Park could be regenerated to "deliver a new, vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood . spearheaded by a new stadium for Everton Football Club."
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright says "the opportunity to explore the possibility of securing the new home we’ve looked for, for so long, is hugely exciting to me."
Everton has played at the 41,000-capacity Goodison Park since 1892.
A formal planning application could be lodged in the next 12 months.
The statement did not disclose the potential capacity of the new stadium.
