Dallas midfielder Shea to miss 3 months

FRISCO, Texas — FC Dallas midfielder Brek Shea will need about three months to recover after surgery to remove a bone in his right foot.

The team said Shea had the surgery Thursday, and estimated the recovery time at 12 to 14 weeks. That would be about a month before the start of the 2013 regular season.

Shea had three goals and two assists in 21 games for FC Dallas before missing the final month with an abdominal strain stemming from the foot injury. He had 11 goals in 2011.

The 22-year-old has 15 caps with the U.S. national team, but missed two World Cup qualifiers with the injury. The final round of World Cup qualifying starts in February, about the time Shea would be expected to return.
