ISTANBUL — Fenerbahce completed the signing of Netherlands striker Robin van Persie from Manchester United on Tuesday, with the forward being welcomed to the club by thousands of supporters.

Van Persie links up with his former United teammate Nani, who signed for the 19-time Turkish champions last week.

The 31-year-old former Arsenal and Feyenoord striker told supporters at Fenerbahce’s stadium: "I am humbled to see so many fans here today to greet me and welcome me.

"I will do everything in my power to help Fenerbahce win as (many) trophies to make you happy."

Van Persie joined United three years ago in a surprise move from Arsenal for 24 million pounds (then $38 million) and had a season remaining on his contract.

Van Persie was prolific in his first season at Old Trafford, netting 30 goals as United regained the Premier League trophy from Manchester City before Alex Ferguson’s retirement as manager.

But Van Persie has been blighted by injury problems since then, scoring only 10 goals in 29 appearances last season when compatriot Louis van Gaal was in charge.

"I am convinced that I can reach that level and play for many years at the top level," Van Persie said, after being asked if he could reach the level of performance he initially produced for United.

Asked about his emotions on leaving the English club, Van Persie said: "I could see it coming. I could get used to the idea. That’s football."
