STOCKHOLM — Former Denmark striker Jon Dahl Tomasson has been named assistant coach for the national team.

The Danish football association announced Monday that the 39-year-old Tomasson will assist Denmark coach Age Hareide as of June 1. Tomasson is currently an assistant coach for Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem.

Tomasson scored 52 goals in 112 matches for Denmark, equaling Poul Nielsen’s tally as the country’s all-time top scorer. He retired as a player in 2011.

Hareide called Tomasson a leader "who will bring an offensive view of football and an indomitable winning mentality."

Hareide replaced Morten Olsen as Denmark head coach after the team failed to qualify for this summer’s European Championships.
