MOSCOW — Russia’s Kuban Krasnodar says it has signed Portugal striker Hugo Almeida after he was released by Serie A side Cesena.
Almeida, who has 19 goals in 56 games for Portugal and played at last year’s World Cup, recently left an Italian relegation candidate and now joins a team eighth in the Russian Premier League.
The 30-year-old centre-forward has seen his career decline in recent years after leaving Werder Bremen in 2010.
Kuban said Almeida had joined up with the team during its winter training camp in Turkey, passed a medical and signed "a contract until the end of the current season with the option of a one-year extension."
Almeida was released by Cesena on January 19 with the Italian team then nine points from escaping the relegation zone.
