MADRID, Spain — Last-place Cordoba has fired coach Albert Ferrer after earning only four points from the first eight league matches of the season and replaced him with Miroslav Djukic.

The promoted team has yet to win in the top flight with four draws and four losses, including 2-1 defeats to Andalucian rivals Granada and Malaga on consecutive weekends.

Cordoba said in a statement Monday that Ferrer will forever be part of the club’s history "having coached the club to promotion to the Spanish league’s first division after 42 years of waiting."

The 44-year-old Ferrer had been a tough-tackling defender with Barcelona and Chelsea before beginning his coaching career in 2010 with Dutch team Vitesse.

Djukic coached Valencia for six months last season.
