TORREON, Mexico — Two-time defending champion Monterrey played to a scoreless draw at Mexican rival Santos Laguna on Wednesday night in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final.

Monterrey, facing Santos Laguna in the final for the second straight year, is in position to become the first team to win the regional tournament three straight times since Mexico’s Cruz Azul in 1969-1971.

The second leg is May 1 at Monterrey.
