RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s coach Dunga has called up 35-year-old striker Ricardo Oliveira for World Cup qualifiers next month against Chile and Venezuela. The Brazilian soccer confederation announced the move Thursday with Oliveira replacing Roberto Firmino of Liverpool, who has a back injury.
Oliveira of Santos has scored 17 goals to lead Brazil’s top league.
He won the 2004 Copa America and the 2005 Confederations Cup with Brazil and has played in Europe for Valencia, Betis, AC Milan and Zaragoza. He has scored three goals for the national team.
Firmino was injured Wednesday in Liverpool’s penalty-shootout win against Carlisle United in England’s League Cup.
Brazil plays at Chile on Oct. 8 and is home against Venezuela on Oct. 13.
