Poll: Should Camilo play for Canada?

Would you support the idea of a foreign-born player turning out for the Canadian men’s team?

Last week, Vancouver Whitecaps striker Camilo, who is originally from Brazil, told MLSsoccer.com that he eventually hopes to represent Canada and pledge his international allegiance to his adoptive homeland.

“For me, I think it will be a good opportunity to play for Canada,” Camilo said. “Vancouver is a good city, Canada is a beautiful country and if I get the opportunity I will decide with my family.”

Camilo, 24, has been a key player for the Whitecaps since the club’s inaugural MLS season in 2011.

Lately he’s been in blistering form, scoring nine goals in his last seven matches. He leads the league in scoring with 12 goals and on Monday, he was named to the MLS All-Star team and was voted MLS player of the week for the second time this season. The pair of honours came a day after he scored twice in Vancouver’s 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire.

The Brazilian-born forward has applied for permanent residency. Once he acquires that, he would then have to obtain full citizenship in order to play for Canada.

There’s no doubt Camilo would be a great addition to the Canadian roster. It happens all the time in world soccer, but does the idea of capping foreign-born players raise any moral questions for you?
