Who remembers the 2000 Gold Cup final?

If you’re a soccer fan in this country, chances are you haven’t forgotten it. On that fateful day in the Rose Bowl, Canada defeated Colombia in one of the most memorable moments in Canadian soccer history.

Tuesday programming alert: Watch Canada vs. Costa Rica in an international friendly from Edmonton live on all four main Sportsnet channels. Coverage begins at 8pm ET/6pm MT/5pm PT.

The 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup is just around the corner, running from July 7 to 28 in the United States, with Canada competing in a round-robin group with Mexico, Panama and Martinique.

In preparation, Canada will play a friendly against Costa Rica on Tuesday in Edmonton.

Interim coach Colin Miller has put together a young roster for the Costa Rica game. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Canada is in a rebuilding mode after its recent failure to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. Miller is trying to give young prospects as much playing time as possible to better prepare them for the future – including this summer’s Gold Cup.

Chances are the Miller, or whoever will coach the Canadian team at the time, will continue the rebuilding process by employing a young roster at the Gold Cup, using the tournament as a way to give Canada’s prospects more experience and playing time.

But is this the right thing to do?

Should Canada continue with its youth movement at the Gold Cup? Or should the Reds “go for it,” and field a more competitive and experienced side that would give them a better chance of winning the tournament?
