MADRID – Star left-winger Gareth Bale looks likely to miss Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Liverpool as he has not recovered from a muscle injury that sidelined him for the team’s 5-0 La Liga win over Levante at the weekend.

Madrid says following tests that Bale "has been diagnosed with a lesion in the right piriformis muscle" which forms part of the gluteus.

Ancelotti had rested Bale with one eye on the first "clasico" match of the season when they host rivals Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Early last week Bale led Wales to a 2-1 win over Cyprus, consolidating its lead of Group B in European Championship qualifying.
