PARIS — French League Cup winner Saint-Etienne continued its chase for a Champions League place with a 4-2 home win against relegation battler Ajaccio on Wednesday.
Veteran Romania forward Adrian Mutu put Ajaccio ahead early on before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalized midway through the first half.
Midfielders Mathieu Bodmer and Renaud Cohade scored in quick succession after the break. Mutu pulled a goal back in the 76th from the penalty spot for his 10th league goal this season, but Aubameyang added another late on for his 19th.
Saint-Etienne, which beat Rennes 1-0 to win the League Cup on Saturday, moved provisionally into fourth place, two points behind Lyon and four behind second-place Marseille.
Also Wednesday, Rennes lost 2-1 at home to last-place Troyes, which kept alive its slim chances of staying up.
