ZURICH — Former Arsenal and AC Milan defender Philippe Senderos has returned home to Switzerland to join Grasshoppers.

The Zurich club says the 30-year-old Senderos has signed a six-month contract.

Senderos was a free agent since agreeing with Aston Villa this week to terminate his contract after falling out of favour. He is seeking to revive his career and international selection chances ahead of the European Championship.

Senderos, who has played at three World Cups, made the last of his 55 appearances for Switzerland almost 18 months ago.

Grasshoppers is second in the Swiss league, trailing 10 points behind six-time defending champion FC Basel.
