TORONTO — Canadian star midfielder Sophie Schmidt has signed with reigning European champion FFC Frankfurt.
The storied German club has won the UEFA women’s Champions League four times: in 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2015.
The 27-year-old from Abbotsford, B.C., played for Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League most recently. She also played in Sweden and for the Vancouver Whitecaps.
"Off on a new adventure," Schmidt tweeted.
The Canadian Soccer Association says Schmidt is the first Canadian to ever sign with a defending women’s European champion.
Canadian coach John Herdman has said Schmidt has the potential to become the best midfielder in the world.
