TORONTO — FC Dallas took goalie Dan Kennedy with the first pick of the Chivas USA dispersal draft Wednesday.
Only six other players were taken, with most teams passing. But the Montreal Impact picked up 22-year-old defender Donny Toia while Toronto FC chose 19-year-old midfielder Marco Delgado.
The emphasis was on youth, other than the 32-year-old Kennedy.
Expansion New York City FC selected 20-year-old midfielder Matthew Dunn with the second pick. D.C. United used the fourth selection on 23-year-old midfielder-forward Thomas McNamara.
The Impact used the sixth pick on Toia, a former Real Salt Lake homegrown player who started at left back for 24 of Chivas’ final 27 games.
"He is an athletic young guy that has already played a lot of games in MLS. He’s a good defender with experience that you don’t usually get with a player of his age," Frank Klopas, Montreal’s head coach and director of player personnel, said in a statement. "He’s a versatile, natural left back who can play both sides. We’ll now see how he can fit in with the team at camp."
Colorado took 18-year-old midfielder Caleb Calvert eighth and the San Jose Earthquakes picked up 22-year-old forward Kristopher Tyrpak ninth.
Toronto used its 14th pick on Delgado, a homegrown player who has played 37 games at both fullback positions and in the midfield.
The Vancouver Whitecaps passed.
Kennedy was seen as the jewel of the draft, which was held after the league decided to fold Chivas. A new Los Angeles franchise will resurface in 2017.
Players not chosen will take part in the MLS re-entry draft, if eligible, or be made available via the waiver draft.
Star Chivas striker Erick (Cubo) Torres was not part of the dispersal draft. The league is trying to negotiate a long-term deal to keep the Mexican international in MLS.
