Toronto FC will play an exhibition match against Italian club AS Roma on Aug. 7 at BMO Field, sportsnet.ca has learned.
Two sources verified the news to sportsnet.ca. Toronto FC is expected to make a formal announcement on Wednesday afternoon.
The friendly comes between two MLS regular-season games for TFC: away to the New England Revolution (Aug. 4) and home to the Seattle Sounders (Aug. 10).
Formed in 1927, AS Roma is one of the biggest teams in Italian soccer, and features notable stars Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi, two key members of Italy’s World Cup winning side from 2006.
Roma has won three Italian league titles, the last in 2001, and finished sixth place in the 2012-13 Serie A campaign.
Before the Toronto friendly, AS Roma will compete in Major League Soccer’s All Star Game on July 31 at Sporting Park, the home of MLS club Sporting Kansas City.
TFC has a tradition of playing summer friendlies against top teams from around the world.
Past opponents have included Premiership teams Liverpool, Aston Villa and Bolton; Independiente and River Plate of Argentina; Mexico’s Pachuca, and Spanish club Real Madrid.
