VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps have signed Kendall Waston to a multi-year contract extension, the club announced Thursday.

The hulking central defender has been an integral part of the backline since joining Vancouver in August 2014 from Deportivo Saprissa in his native Costa Rica.

"(Waston’s) passion, physical presence, and ability to come up big in crucial situations have been instrumental to our success," Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said in a release. "He’s a leader on the pitch and in the locker-room, and we’re excited to have arguably the best centre back in the league during the prime of his career."

The 27-year-old Waston finished second in voting for Major League Soccer’s defender of the year in 2015, a campaign that saw Vancouver finish second in the Western Conference before bowing out in the second round of the playoffs.

"I’m thankful to the city, club, and fans for embracing me and my family," said Waston. "I look forward to helping the team bring even more success to Vancouver."

The Whitecaps also locked up midfielder Matias Laba to multi-year contract extension last week.
