YORKTON, SK (December 14, 2014) Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling capped off a tremendous week of elite curling competition today in Yorkton, SK, with Team Gushue (St. John’s, NL) and Team Muirhead (Stirling, Scotland) being named champions of the Canadian Open.
In the men’s final, Team Gushue defeated hometown favourite Team Laycock (Saskatoon) for a 6-5 win. This is Gushue’s second title of the Grand Slam season, following a championship win at the Masters in October. Gushue takes home $24,000 for his first Canadian Open title.
“From our standpoint, this event was a grind. We never led for a single end in the playoffs until the final end,” said skip Brad Gushue. “It was a battle for us, but we made a lot of key shots towards the end of each game. The two last shots we made at the end of the final were pretty special.”
On the women’s side, Sochi Olympic Winter Games bronze medallist Team Muirhead won a hard-fought 5-3 battle against two-time defending Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion Team Homan. Muirhead takes home $24,000 from the event and becomes the first women’s team to win a Canadian Open title, as this is the first year women have competed in the event.
“To come out with a victory against a team as good as Rachel Homan’s, it feels fantastic,” said skip Eve Muirhead. “We’re just looking to keep building with every performance. We’re never satisfied, so we always want to get better and better because we know all of the teams are still chasing us.”
A combined purse of $200,000 was awarded to the 32 men’s and women’s teams competing in the six day tournament, which was held at the Gallagher Centre in Yorkton, SK. The next stop on the tour is the Elite 10 in Fort McMurray, AB from March 19-22, 2015.
