CINCINNATI -- Canadian Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia saved seven match points in a clutch victory to win their seventh title of the season 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 15-13 (match tiebreak) over Americans Bob and Mike Bryan on Sunday at the Cincinnati Masters.
The nail-biting finish ended after 76 minutes with Nestor's team lifting their seventh title of the season, including Wimbledon, where they also beat the Californians in another close call on court.
"It was just see saw battle," said Nestor. "We feel fortunate, I thought it was a great match. They put a lot of pressure on us. We hung in there and played well.
Second-seeded Nestor and Zimonjic, who are No. 1 in the ATP doubles team standings, rallied from 9-4 down in the third set match tiebreak. The first team to reach 10 by a margin of two wins the match.
The 36-year-old Toronto native said the turning point was easy to see.
"When we got from 9-6 to 9-7 we were back in it," said Nestor. "I thought 9-4, just play it out and see what happens.
"But once we won that 9-6 point, I realized that if we win this point on Bob's serve, then Nenad is serving two serves, so we're right back in it."
In the first set, Nestor had gone down a break in the fourth game as his team trailed 1-3, with the Canadian's side never able to make up the gap.
Zimonjic saved a pair of break points as he held to keep the pair in the chase 2-4. The Bryans lifted the opening set after just 23 minutes on the first of two set points when Zimonjic returned out.
Nestor and Zimonjic squared the match as they claimed the second set in a tiebreaker, setting themselves up for a command performance in the winner-take-all tiebreak third set.
"The Bryans definitely attract a lot of people but we're starting to make a name for ourselves," said Nestor. "Doubles is always well covered and well attended in the States.
"We really pulled this one out, I don't know what to say," added Nestor. "The Bryans were dominating but we got a bit lucky."
Nestor and Zimonjic stand 44-10 this season after claiming their fourth Master trophy of 2009. They have now beaten the Bryans for titles at Wimbledon, Montecarlo, Rome and Madrid and Cincinnati since January.
Nestor now owns 62 ATP titles after adding a fourth in Cincinnati. He previously won with Mark Knowles in 1996, 1998 and 2004.
