MONTREAL -- Serena Williams has withdrawn from next month's Rogers Cup with a foot injury.
The American is scheduled to undergo surgery after getting cut by broken glass at a restaurant last week. She'll miss all of the hardcourt events leading up to the U.S. Open, including the Aug. 13-22 tournament in Montreal.
"I'm so upset that I won't be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery," Williams said in a statement.
The Rogers Cup expects to have 42 of the world's top 45 players in the draw.
Williams has been featured in promotional material for the tournament. She lost in the semifinals of last year's Rogers Cup in Toronto.
The 28-year-old hasn't played in Montreal since 2000.
