World No. 4 Novak Djokovic is expected to miss the next six to 12 weeks because of an elbow injury, according to multiple reports, a timeline that means playing in the U.S. Open is likely out of the question.

The news comes from Serbian journalist Sasa Ozmo, who notes Djokovic has a bone bruise in his elbow because of overuse.

Tennis Life’s Stephanie Myles adds Djokovic was examined by Serbian Davis Cup physician Zdeslav Milinkovic, an orthopaedic surgeon and friend, who made the recommendations for the rest period.

The 30-year-old former No. 1 last played at Wimbledon when he retired from a quarter-final match against Tomas Berdych because of the elbow injury.

Djokovic recently saw a specialist in Toronto, Myles reports, who said the symptoms have improved since then.

The U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam event on the tennis calendar, is held from Aug. 28 to Sept. 10 in New York.
