TORONTO — Gabriela Dabrowski advanced to the second round of the Tevlin Challenger tennis tournament Monday with a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over fellow Canadian Katherine Sebov.
Dabrowski, the eighth seed at the tournament fell behind 5-2 to 15-year-old Sebov in the second set, but the Ottawa native rebounded to avoid a third set.
"It’s great to get through my first match, but I definitely feel the things I need to work on," Dabrowski said. "I’ve been feeling really good in practice and I need to believe that what I’ve been working on in practice will work for me when it matters in a match as well. I think my feet need to be quicker and I need to be in a better position faster, and I’ll work on that this week."
Dabrowski was the only Canadian to advance Monday, with Rosie Johanson, Petra Januskova and Maureen Drake all losing their first-round matches.
Elsewhere, top seed Taylor Townsend of the United States defeated Hungary’s Fanni Stollar, 6-2, 6-2.
