Former champ Jovanovski advances at Baku Cup

BAKU, Azerbaijan — Fifth-seeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia survived a scare against Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria, winning 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 Monday to advance to the second round of the Baku Cup.

Mayr-Achleitner served for the match at 5-4 in the second set against Jovanovski, who won this WTA event in 2012.

Also Monday, Shahar Peer of Israel ousted sixth-seeded Yvonne Meusburger of Austria 6-2, 6-4 at Baku Tennis Academy.

Other first-round winners included Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland, Katarzyna Piter of Poland, Urszula Radwanska of Poland and Pauline Parmentier of France.

The 29th-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania is the top-seeded player, followed by 19-year-old Elina Svitolina of Ukraine who won the tournament in 2013.
