Novak Djokovic to be ranked outside top 3 for first time since 2009

Novak Djokovic addresses the media after his French Open Semi-finals loss to Dominic Thiem, and laughs off any suggestion that this loss had anything to do with new coach Andre Agassi.

For the first time since October 2009, Novak Djokovic won’t be in the top three of ATP’s rankings.

The past year has been a disappointment for the former world No. 1, with him expected to drop to No. 4 once the 2017 French Open concludes. His drop is the result of him losing to Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, along with the fact that Stan Wawrinka made it to the tournament’s final after beating Andy Murray on Friday.

Rafael Nadal is also expected to pass Djokovic, having advanced to the final as well.

It was only a little less than a year ago that the Serb had won the 2016 French Open to complete a career Grand Slam, while also holding all four major titles at the same time.

Djokovic hasn’t won a Slam since, but his fall from the top three signifies a different type of low.

For some perspective, the last time he was ranked fourth, Peyton Manning was still on the Indianapolis Colts, while LeBron James had yet to win an NBA Championship.
