MONTREAL — Coco Vanderweghe’s family has a history in Montreal and now the 22-year-old American is adding her own chapter.
Vanderweghe’s third-round victory over Jelena Jankovic on Thursday was her second win in a row over a former world No. 1-ranked player after she beat Ana Ivanovic on Wednesday.
Thursday’s win put her into a quarter-final on Friday with Ekaterina Makarova.
Not bad for a player who had to get through the qualifying tournament to get into the US$2.44 women’s Rogers Cup.
The strong performance comes two months after her first WTA tournament win at the Topshelf Open in the Netherlands.
“One of my goals when I came back from Europe was to beat a top-10 player,” said Vanderweghe, adding that after the win over Ivanovic her coach said: “Don’t be satisfied.”
Vanderweghe is from Rancho Sante Fe, Calif, but she has roots in Montreal.
Her grandfather, former NBA player Ernie Vanderweghe, was born in Montreal. Her mother Tauna was a member of the U.S. swimming team that competed at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
Her father Kiki Vanderweghe played in the NBA and was later a coach and general manager.
