Voegele beats ex-champ Goerges at Gastein Ladies

BAD GASTEIN, Austria — Flavia Pennetta pulled out of the Gastein Ladies clay-court event with an ankle injury shortly before her opening match on Monday.

The 13th-ranked Italian, who was the top-seeded player, was scheduled to take on Grace Min of the United States. Pennetta will be replaced by a qualifier.

Earlier, Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland defeated former champion Julia Goerges 7-6 (0), 6-2 in the opening round. Voegele saved four break points in the opening set and held serve throughout the match against the 99th-ranked German, who won the tournament in 2010.

Also, eighth-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic hit seven aces while beating Mona Barthel of Germany 6-4, 6-4.

In a match between two Austrian wildcards, Lisa-Maria Moser defeated Yvonne Neuwirth 6-2, 6-4.
