WOLFVILLE, N.S. — It’ll be the Laval Rouge et Or and the UBC Thunderbirds going for gold in Canadian university women’s soccer.

Laval’s Joelle Gosselin capitalized on a broken play in extra time as the Rouge et Or edged the UOIT Ridgebacks 2-1 on Friday in U Sports semifinal action.

Laval’s other goal came in the seventh minute thanks to an own goal when Ridgebacks defender Rachel Matthews got her foot on the ball but deflected it over top of Helen Frampton, who was charging out to challenge the play. The ball ended up rolling in the back of the UOIT net.

Taijah Henderson responded for the Ridgebacks in the 15th minute.

UBC earned its place in Sunday’s championship match after a 1-0 victory on penalty kicks against the Queen’s Gaels in the other semi.

Aman Shergill, Reetu Johal and Rachel Jones scored, and the Thunderbirds won the shootout 3-2 after playing to a scoreless draw through regulation and extra time.

Tara Bartram and Jenny Wolever scored for the Gaels.

UOIT and Queen’s will play for bronze on Sunday before Laval and UBC hit the pitch for gold.

Earlier in the day the Acadia Axewomen beat the StFX X-Women 2-1 in extra time to grab a spot in the fifth-place match against the Saskatchewan Huskies, who beat the Trinity Western Spartans 1-0 in extra time.

The Axewomen and Huskies play their match Saturday.
