Drafting is an imperfect science but many hockey clubs getting better at it
June 22 2018
Sportsnet hockey analyst Chris Johnston sits down with Sat and Alex beside the NHL Draft floor before the first overall selection is made in a few hours. He discusses the elite picks and the second-tier selections that fall afterwards, including the options Vancouver will have at no. 7. A lot of attention is put on the first round, but there is still important decisions in later rounds. "GMs, you can't mess up the first pick. Later on, you can take some risks." Ryan Merkley has a lot of upside, but something has turned teams off a player who earlier might have gone in the top 15. Not all teams value character the same; for many, talent still rules.

For Canucks, thinking big-picture means building patiently through the draft
June 21 2018
Sportsnet's John Shannon joins Sat and Alex in person at the NHL Draft in Dallas to talk about potential trade floor deals depending on the number of first-round picks teams have. He ran into the Islanders new GM and says of him: Lou Lamoriello has a plan. The Canucks should be thinking big picture, which begins with building through the draft. The Senators indicate they will keep their no. 4 pick, as they should. Matt Duchene is in, Erik Karlsson is a question mark. "We don't have an indication one way or another." Certainly however, moving Mike Hoffman was a message for Karlsson. Speaking of... More hockey teams need better human resources management, fitting of the corporations they are. "The macho side of sport," he says, can interfere with emotional health. "The only way you're going to be better is to admit you have a fault."
Jim Benning on drafting seventh and what would entice Canucks to trade their pick
June 21 2018
The Canucks GM joins Satiar Shah and Alex Auld table-side at the NHL Draft in Dallas to talk about The List and the fact it's never final until it's final, which happens "when you're walking up to the stage to make the pick." They have not received a concrete offer for their no. 7 pick, but are listening and would entertain the right offer. There's also the goal of picking up more picks. "If we do move that seventh pick... it will be for a younger player that fits into the group." He discusses the many ways the draft has changed during his time and what the future holds for goalie coach Dan Cloutier.
