Sam Cosentino on the many reasons he's a big fan of Noah Dobson
June 22 2018
Sportsnet's prospect analyst lives for this time of year and agrees with Sat Shah and Alex Auld that it's kinda a lot like Christmas. "I love this stuff. I'm fired up!" He's watched a lot of these teens since they were 16, has met their parents and seen them develop over the years leading to this day. The fluctuation begins at no. 3, he agrees. A few stops later, he likes Noah Dobson, but he may not be there for the Canucks to choose. "I'd take him at three."

Drafting is an imperfect science but many hockey clubs getting better at it
June 22 2018
Sportsnet hockey analyst Chris Johnston sits down with Sat and Alex beside the NHL Draft floor before the first overall selection is made in a few hours. He discusses the elite picks and the second-tier selections that fall afterwards, including the options Vancouver will have at no. 7. A lot of attention is put on the first round, but there is still important decisions in later rounds. "GMs, you can't mess up the first pick. Later on, you can take some risks." Ryan Merkley has a lot of upside, but something has turned teams off a player who earlier might have gone in the top 15. Not all teams value character the same; for many, talent still rules.

For Canucks, thinking big-picture means building patiently through the draft
June 21 2018
Sportsnet's John Shannon joins Sat and Alex in person at the NHL Draft in Dallas to talk about potential trade floor deals depending on the number of first-round picks teams have. He ran into the Islanders new GM and says of him: Lou Lamoriello has a plan. The Canucks should be thinking big picture, which begins with building through the draft. The Senators indicate they will keep their no. 4 pick, as they should. Matt Duchene is in, Erik Karlsson is a question mark. "We don't have an indication one way or another." Certainly however, moving Mike Hoffman was a message for Karlsson. Speaking of... More hockey teams need better human resources management, fitting of the corporations they are. "The macho side of sport," he says, can interfere with emotional health. "The only way you're going to be better is to admit you have a fault."
