The Chicago Wolves captured the third Calder Cup championship in franchise history after defeating the Springfield Thunderbirds 4-0 in Game 5 Saturday.

The win gave the Wolves a 4-1 series win in the AHL championship.

The Thunderbirds won the first game of the series 6-5 in overtime but the Wolves then won four straight games — outscoring Springfield 18-4 in those wins, with two shutouts.

Josh Leivo won the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as playoff MVP after scoring 15 goals and 29 points in 18 games for the Wolves. It was the highest point total by any player in the AHL playoffs in 14 years.

This was the first time since 2019 that the Calder Cup has been awarded, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Wolves are the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. The Thunderbirds are the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues.
