The List: Top 5 sports vomiting moments

Vomiting on fellow spectators is a relatively new phenomenon in sports, but hurling on the field of play has a long and storied history.

The List brings you the Top 5 most famous incidents of vomiting and sports.

With the news out of Philadelphia Friday, we thought we should throw this up right away…

1. June 1997: During Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz, Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls took turns draining and filling buckets, while battling the flu. In between bouts of vomiting, the Chicago legend played 44 minutes and scored 38 points, including the game-winning three-pointer to lead the Bulls to their fifth NBA title.

2. February 2005: The one-time spokesperson for Campbell’s Chunky Soup, Donovan McNabb. was unable to avoid blowing chunks of his own during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XXXIX.

According to post-game reports, McNabb was suffering from a serious case of nausea all game and at one point Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell claimed that he had to call a few plays due to his QB’s illness. McNabb would downplay the incidents, saying he was not sick and did not throw up. He just said he was tired.

Ironically, McNabb was also seen spilling his guts at the conclusion of a 2002 regular-season game played at Alltel Stadium, where Super Bowl XXXIX was contested.

3. Sep. 1996: Pete Sampras literally left it all on the court during his 1996 U.S. Open quarter-final against Alex Corretja. With the score tied at 1 during their fifth-set tiebreaker, a dehydrated and exhausted Sampras vomited twice on the court. Sampras, who needed a half-gallon of intravenous fluids afterwards, prevailed in a four-hour and nine-minute marathon 7-6 5-7 5-7 6-4 7-6.

4. May 2010: With his Phoenix Suns set to take on their arch-rival Los Angeles Lakers in a crucial Game 5 of their Western Conference final series, coach Alvin Gentry wasn’t about to miss it-even if it meant vomiting into a bucket while on the bench. Or as Sir Charles put it on TNT: "That’s what you get for eating avocado."

5. April 24, 2010: Patrice Evra and Nani played their guts out for United in a 3-1 win over Spurs, literally. On an unusually hot day in Manchester the two players were caught on television throwing up at various points during the match.

“Maybe the heat brought it on a little bit,” Alex Ferguson said of Evra, who had to come off in the second half. “It was a warm day. I don’t know what’s happened, whether it’s something he ate or is something going around the place.”
